the desired strain is
ε = 0.0102m / 8.8m = 0.001159
and so the allowable stress is
σ = Eε = 4.0e9N/m² * 0.001159 = 4.636e6 N/m²
Find the required area using
σ = F / A = 2 * 83kg * 9.8m/s² / A = 4.636e6 N/m²
leads to
total area A = 3.51e4 m²
a/ number of threads
N = A / πd²/4 = 3.51e4m² / (π(2e6m)²/4) = 1.17e8 strands ◄
so I get about twice the answer you show.
b/ diameter of rope
πD²/4 = 3.51e4 m²
so D = 2.114e2 m = 2.114 cm ◄
so I get around √2 times your answer.
Did you miss the fact that there are TWO climbers?
