Why does NATO support rebel groups in Syria?

If they supported the Syrian government, terrorism would be fought together, Syria would be free and at peace. I do not understand.

At issue is that the President has been in power for 20 years, and refuses to leave, just as his father was president for 29 years.  Sounds more like a monarchy.  He changed their constitution in 2012 so that a president can only be in office for 2 consecutive 7 year terms for a total of 14 years.  Hopefully he follows through and leaves by 2026 which would be 14 years after the constitution was changed.

Another thing he changed in their constitution was that the old one stipulated that a candidate had to be a Muslim, and he removed that.  That riled up the heavily religious in the country.

There are too many different sects in that country, just like in Iraq, so nobody gets along very well.  As different groups constantly try to rebel and take a part of the country for themselves, as ISIS and the Kurdish had been doing, al-Assad cracked down hard with the military upon the rebel citizens, claiming that he was just fighting rebels.

Mainly though, is that Syria does not play nice with Israel.  Everything which has gone on there is not unique to them or anybody else, but if you play nice with Israel and the USA, you can even order the death of a journalist, fund the Muslim Brotherhood, and have your citizens take down the World Trade Center and nothing will happen to you.

They Syrian government ARE the terrorists.  I don't blame you for being confused because there is so much misinformation out there.  But basically the Syrian government has been killing their own people for many years now.  That's pretty undeniable not to mention despicable.

Syria under the legally recognized Assad government isn't a western puppet state. It is friendly with Iran and Russia, so for that reason the West is doing everything in its power to replace the Assad government with a pro west government especially since Syria rejected a pipeline project to supply Europe with oil, which would have hurt Russia's monopoly of oil to Europe.
