Let's assume that the question is asking how many years it is from the exact same date on each of those years.

Let's try Jan 15, 2010, and Jan 15, 2011. That's 1 year, clearly.

How about Jun 22, 2010 to Jun 22, 2017? Let's see, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 ... 7 years.

The pattern is, just subtract the earlier year from the later one. 2011 - 2010, or 2017 - 2010.

Now try it with your dates.

Inclusive? then 101 (count the numbers 1584.... 1684

exclusive, then 99 (count the numbers 1585....1683)

basic arithmetic difference, then 100 (1684 - 1584 or count the numbers 1585...1684)

There are three ways to look at this.

1) exact date to same exact date:

From May 12, 1584 to May 12, 1684 = 100 years

2) Elapsed time (includes the two years themselves):

Midnight, morning of Jan 1, 1584 to Midnight late on Dec 31, 1684 = 101 years.

3) distance: in mathematics, when looking for the distance between two sets, you look for the shortest line joining them (no point on the line belongs to either year):

Midnight late on Dec 31 1584 to midnight on morning of Jan 1, 1684 = 99 years.

From an arbitrary date (month/day) in 1584 to an arbitrary date in 1684 can be any number of fractional years between 99 and 101 years depending on the specific date in each year.

From any date in 1584 to that same date in 1684 is 100 years.

From the beginning of 1584 to the beginning of 1684 is 100 years.

From the beginning of 1584 to the end of 1684 is 101 years.

From the end of 1584 to the beginning of 1684 is 99 years.

Try a simpler case.

How many years from 2000 to 2001?

Or from 2019 to 2020?

Then from 2000 to 2002?

Do a few more simple ones. You will see the pattern: Just subtract them!!

So in your case this is 1684 - 1584 = ?

Note however, if you want to include the whole first year and last, then its one extra:

From 2000 to 2001, there are TWO full years.

From 2000 to 2002, there are THREE full years.

IOW, do you want to include the "the end points", ?

If so, its 1684 - 1584 + 1
