    Reptiles dont have a cerebral cortex. They make do with pretty much a stem. So there's no thinking or memories or an area for emotional response. But I'd be compassionate even to a bug ...life should be respected. So it's okay to anthropomorphize, if it gets you to follow that golden rule.
