    To feast and celebrate your union the story goes the more everyone eats the happier the couple will be.  Certain dishes are normally prepared for the feast with wine or champagne.

    It is for family and friends to " receive" the couple as married....then a celebration ensues.

    Weddings used to involve a lot of uncomfortable travel, usually by horseback or carriage over bumpy roads. It was the custom to host a meal for these wearing travelers before sending them back onto the road after the ceremony. This transmogrified into the spectacles we see at some modern weddings.
