Can someone explain how a more socialist or communist U.S. would be like?
I hate capitalism, there are so many issues. Can someone realistically explain what America would be like if we changed the system to be more left? You can interpret this how you like but I’m just curious of how it would be if we didn’t have this awful capitalism like we do now. How things would change and be implicated, within the government and society.
Also, I’d rather not have right-wing conservatives butt in, but whatever.

Worker cooperatives. Nationalized utilities. Feminine values like sharing and caring.

What it would be like in the beginning would be that we would get more public services for free.
But our taxes would go through the roof.
When that is not enough to pay for all the free stuff then they would seize assets.
First it would be major companies like Venezuela did.
Then they would seize small and mid size businesses.
Finally they would seize your assets assuming that you have any left.
You would begin with free/government paid health care and end up with no medicine much like they have experienced in Venezuela.
At first you would end up with cheaper food then there would be less and less food.
Partially because foreign suppliers will sell food where they can make money.
But mainly because the government will have seized the farms and they will have no clue how to produce food.
You would end up with a free college education that teaches you only what the politicians approve.
Not that it would do you any good because by the time you graduate the only place to work will be for the government.
There would be no free speech, free expression or freedom of religion as all of these will now be exercised based on the approval of the politicians.
So while you may not like capitalism you would hate socialism.

If we moved more to the left, we'd still be a capitalist country but we'd be more like one of the Scandinavian countries. There would be universal healthcare, paid parental leave, free or low cost higher education, a highly unionized workforce, subsidized daycare, pensions, generous vacation time, etc. The tax rates would be higher but there would be more benefits for the ordinary citizens.
Sweden, for instance, has more billionaires per capita than the United States but has very strong social programs that help the average person.

It's not about capitalism vs socialism or communism. Capitalism used to work a lot better for working people. It wasn't that long ago! With the 'Reagan Revolution', both our parties moved way to the right. People like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren sound like radical 'leftists' today, but they are actually remnants of the pre-Reagan Democratic Party, trying to get the Democrats back where they were in the 50s/60s/70s.
We've allowed money to assume way too much importance in our elections. Both parties need tons of money to run election campaigns, and they both get it from the same sources. They both put their corporate sponsors above their duty to The People. That's not capitalism, it's just corruption. These days ANY law or measure that helps working people is labeled 'socialist'.
It's not capitalism that's the problem, it's how we do capitalism.
