When does Generation X really start? I have seen sources ranging from 1961 to 1967, with 1965 being the widely accepted. ?

There's always generational overlap. There are people born as early as 1960 whose values and attitudes are more in line with gen X as there are people born as late as 1968 whose values and attitudes are more boomer. This isn't like geological strata where there are clear lines of demarcation between eras. In some places societal change came quickly. In other places change came slowly.  Additionally, family values and circumstance comes into play. True boomers have one or more parents who actively participated in WWII as soldiers or support. The parents of Gen X were too young to actively participate.  It's best not to generalize all people as the same without exception based on nothing more than their year of birth.

So you think we have access to information that the sources you researched don't, that we somehow know something those sources don't.

    Okay.  Gen X started July 1, 1965.

There is no "really" as an answer to this question.  Different social science researchers used different starting points.  Unlike the "boomer" generation, which is consensually agreed to have begun when WWII had ended, the "generation X" has no particular event to mark its beginning.
