Peroxyacyl ntirates (PANs) are potent respiratory irritants that form during photochemical smog events. They are an example of a secondary air pollutant in that they aren’t directly emitted, but form when other (primary) pollutants react in the atmosphere. The simplest and most common PAN is peroxyacetyl nitrate, shown to the right. Write the reactions for how peroxyacetylnitrate might form during the oxidation of ethane in a polluted atmosphere. (Hint, assume that the aldehyde produced in the mechanism undergoes photochemical composition to produce H and RCO, as occurs with formaldehyde).
