explain why harmful mutations tend to disappear, while beneficial mutations become widespread. ?

    It goes along with Darwinism. Survival of the fittest and natural selection. If a genetic mutation makes life more difficult for an organism, it’s less likely to survive a long time, and less likely to reproduce. Organisms with beneficial mutations will live longer and have more opportunity to reproduce.
