What you need to face a stressful situation when you're all ready burned out is the FACT that unless you see this through, there will be no resolution.
first responders and especially those of us who work in hospitals where we encounter patients in acute situations, one right after another, just have to suck it up and keep working through it. You can't walk away when someone is in need.
You have to suck it up, work through it and rest when it is behind you.

Not much read now, Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking has the answer, the pizza method. Divide the problem into small pieces and deal with them much more easily. Indeed the Big Problem can be thought of as one wretched piece of the whole pizza. You deal with all the easy bits and then, enervated and raring to go, and hungry, you fall upon the last piece.
It really is a wonderful book if you are depressed. I let a copy out of my hands years ago and it has always been a missing piece in my life ever since.

1) If possible, stall for time.
2) If #1 is not possible, breathe slowly. There's loads of evidence from laboratory and clinical studies that this is a fast and effective way to calm down. DBT, a therapy that helps people who are very suicidal, recommends a particular slow-breathing method for coping in a moment of crisis. Breathe gently with a hand on your abdomen to feel your big belly muscle go in and out as you breathe. Inhale 5 sec and exhale 7 sec till you feel OK.
A good rule of thumb - don't overlook the value of makeshift solutions. This is similar to the tried-and-true stalling for time method. Use something that buys time.
