    To "The Revolution".  And this loyalty had to be absolute and radical, or you risked being killed for being an enemy of the revolution.  This is the very root of what became known as "The Terror".  Even the radicals who were executing people for merely wondering if they'd gone to far were eventually executed for being enemies of the Revolution.

    Its about a regime change things were so bad for many anything would be better , when you have nothing to live for you can executed kings its a desperate state not a democratic decision
