An object of unknown mass is hung on the

end of an unstretched spring and is released

from rest.

The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s



If the object falls 6.16 cm before first coming to rest, find the period of the motion.

    Since it begins and ends "at rest," KE is not involved and the mass's GPE gets converted into spring SPE:

    mgh = ½kh²

    m/k = h / 2g = 0.0616m / 2*9.81m/s² = 0.00314 s²

    T = 2π√(m/k) = 2π√(0.00314s²) = 0.352 s

    period T = (2PI/√g)*√(x/2) = 6.2832 /√9.81*√0.0308= 2.006√0.0308 = 0.352 sec
