Why was Bill Clinton referred to as the first black president ?
- Anonymous2 months ago
It came from an essay written by Nobel Prize winning African American novelist Toni Morrison, during the Lewinsky scandal. She was commenting on what she saw as the persecution of Clinton by his conservative foes and tied it to a long line of attacks on black masculinity. She said that Clinton was metaphorically black, "blacker than any actual black president could be", because his biography and behavior adhered to so many of the "tropes of blackness" ("born poor, single mother, McDonalds and junk food loving"). And she saw the persecution of Clinton for his unpoliced sexuality as an outgrowth of longstanding attacks on black men's sexuality.
1994 Crime Bill. That's why.
