commuting or renting?
hey guys. i wanna ask for yalls opinion before i even think about bringing this to my mother. so, i plan on doing the “year up” program. i haven’t been accepted yet but i just wanted to plan just in case... i live about two hours/one and a half hours from the campus, but everything is online to due the pandemic. one of the rules is that you must be commuting distance. is it smarter to rent a room near campus, or just commute occasionally?

If you return to going to school on campus, I would say renting a room nearby is better than commuting.

If everything is now taught online then you gain zero advantage on being closer to the campus.
The costs of renting and living independently would far outweigh the costs and inconvenience of what is still a reasonable daily commuting time if only done occasionally.
When/if things get back to anything remotely close to normal and the socialising aspect of college life resumes then it could make sense to jointly rent accommodation close to the campus.
For now, just save your money and study as much as you can: you’ll be really glad of the far lower student debt you’ll end up with when you graduate if you aren’t shelling out on unnecessary accommodation and living expenses.
