Were there racial tension overseas in the 1980s?

    Yes. There was a great deal overseas in the USA. Not so much here in the UK.

    Yes. There is no place on earth "modern humans" are, as different races, that is immune from racial tension. This goes back hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years...

    Many people just don't like others who "don't look like them". The original Star Trek series had a lot of "societal observations". The "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" first aired in 1969 and was a good example of that which has been happening on earth for many, many, years. There are lots of other examples of the entertainment industry using entertainment to bring visibility to society's issues.

    Of course. To name just one example off the top of my head, Apartheid in South Africa.

    Yes - racial tension is pervasive.
