Close variants are... very similar variants (for both words and search intent)! The reason is avoid to exclude queries with clearly the same search intent, so it's an extension of the query with the exact words.
Phrase match requires quotation mark, for example: "training shoes".
An example of variants:Query: "training shoes"
Accepted queries: "best training shoes", "training blue shoes", "training shoes woman"
Not accepted queries: "shoes for training", "tennis shoes", "fitness shoes and accessories"
