Vertigo (1958) Alfred Hitchcock's great masterpiece. On the surface it's a suspenseful mystery thriller. On a deeper level it's a tragedy about a man tormented by his past, chasing after a fantasy, missing what's in front of him, and ending up with nothing.

High Noon (1952) A western about a soon to be retired sheriff who tries to gather a posse to arrest a criminal gang that's returning to town. It's widely seen as a commentary on McCarthyism, but it's themes are timeless. It's about the excuses and rationalizations people make for not doing what they should. Maybe a bit slow paced and even boring for modern audiences, but still worth watching.

Rashomon (1950) In medieval Japan a husband and wife are attacked by a bandit and the woman is raped and the man killed. At the trial the woman, the bandit, and the dead man himself (through a medium) all give radically different accounts of what happened and all claim to be the killer. A murder mystery that doubles as an allegory about the lies we tell each other and ourselves.

I'll grant that they're all rather dark and not inspiring, but I found them all thought provoking.

The 5 People You Meet in Heaven, was extremely thought provoking.....as at least 3...if not 4 of them,  were people the guy would not have expected.

It wasn't so much people you know,  but people who shaped your life one way or the other,    often without you even knowing it......so it makes you wonder who your 5 people would be.

What 5 people have touched your life and helped shape it. ?

It's a bit dated, but "Grand Canyon" has always been one of my favorites.
