Which is the difference between panties, briefs, underpants and underwear?

Panties are women's underwear. Underpants is what one would wear under the pants. Briefs are basically a synonym of underpants but usually refers to sleeveless underpants (as opposed to boxers). Underwear is often used synonymously with underpants but can mean any clothing used under the main clothing...so things like pantyhose or bras can be underwear.
