Is it normal for thick curly/wavy hair to look thin when straightened?

I've always been told I have thick hair, even by hair stylists. It is curly/wavy. However, when it is straightened it looks and feels at least half of the thickness it normally does. Is this a normal curly/wavy hair thing?
