Do psychologists have the power to have adults locked up in a mental hospital?

With the approval of 2 immediate family members, under the suggestion of a mental health professional under the appropriate circumstances, a court order can be made to take the person who presents an immediate danger to themselves or others into a facility for a 72 hour observation... is what it's called. Being "locked up" and for how long is a completely different animal.

Explicitly articulating what you seem to be trying to parse out is it's the family members who have the power to initiate the court order. Not the health professional, per se, of any caliber or creed.

They have the ability to send the patient to the mental hospital BUT it is the mental institution's decision and they do not have to listen to the advice of the psychologist.
