Not anymore. It was one of the most popular names in the early 1900s and still in or near the top 100 as late as 1960 but has dropped to about #650 now.

Yes but now days it seems to be more common as a middle name. Maria is more common as a first name. Both Marie and Maria are very pretty.

Marie is a more common middle name,
but that does not make it a "middle name only".
It is a classic name, and the French version of Mary/Maria.
