what do you call it when somebody becomes completely mute and unable to respond to stimuli following a mental breakdown?

what's the medical term for this?  is it like an extreme version of psychosis or something?

Catatonic depression is a subtype of depression characterized by not speaking or seeming to be in a daze for a prolonged period. A person with catatonic depression does not respond to what is going on around them and may be silent and motionless.

The most common symptoms associated with catatonia are mutism (not speaking) and stupor (the state of being in a daze).

    Symptoms Include:

    1. Mutism – The person is verbally unresponsive and refuses to speak.

    2. Stupor – This is one of the common signs of catatonia. It is characterized by a lack of mobility and speech, and decreased response to stimuli.

    3. Catalepsy – Being in a trance-like state.

    4. Unusual mannerisms – Irregular speech patterns or movements or staring.

    5. Wavy flexibility – The person doesn’t respond to commands and has an immobile posture.

    6. Posturing – The person remains in the same posture for a long period of time.

    7. Grimacing – Making a face that looks like a person is in pain.

    8. Echolalia – Senseless repetition of the words another person says.

    9. Echopraxia – The meaningless repetition of movements another person does.

    10. Staring – The person’s eye is fixed on a particular space and open for long periods of time.

    11. Negativism – The person is always having negative thoughts and feels sad every day, or feeling hungry but refusing to eat.

    12. Stereotypy – Ritualistic movements, such as rocking or crossing and uncrossing the legs repeatedly.

A person with catatonic depression will probably also experience classic depression symptoms, such as feeling low or sad. They may also experience a sense of hopelessness.

Depression can affect a person’s appetite, sleep levels, concentration, and movement.

People with catatonia can experience a variety of symptoms. The most common symptom is stupor, which means that the person can't move, speak, or respond to stimuli.
