Two trains leave a station at 11:00 am. One train travels north at a rate (speed) of 56 mph and another travels east at a rate (speed) of 192 mph. Assuming that the trains do not stop, at what time will the trains be 350 miles apart? One train travels north at a rate (speed) of 56 mph

and another travels east at a rate (speed) of 192 mph.

Assuming that the trains do not stop,

at what time will the trains be 350 miles apart?

√( (56t)^2 + (192t)^2 ) = 350

350 = t√(56^2 + 192^2) = 200t

t = 350/200 = 1.75

0.75 hour = 45 minutes

11 am + 1.75 = 12:45 pm

• This is a right triangle Pythagorean Formula problem.  For any time t in hours, the hypotenuse equals SQRT(

(56t)^2 + (192t)^2 ).  Find t so this equals 350.

350 = t SQRT(56^2 + 192^2) = 200t

t = 350/200 = 1.75

.75 hour = 45 minutes

11 am + 1.75 = 12:45 pm
