If it's an Adam Sandler film it's absurd. If it's Kubrick it's interesting.

Behavior learned from your junior high English teacher.  The kids in that English class who over-analyzed books and **** got the best grade.  Then they grew up and continued doing that even when they themselves did not become English teachers.

if you are not paid to do it, then it's a behavior that binds self-referential needs with the curiosity to discover the references of the director/screenwriter and the desire to compare your own perceptions with someone who has seen the same movie. and let's not forget that the first to force us to do it are the teachers at school with their cloying analysis of the text.

Because when you see critics mooning over some film and totally missing the OBVIOUS.......... its fun to point out what nearly everyone else missed.

I could books about all that is wrong with Titanic.........but critics  all fell at his feet and gushed over the film.

Not a one,  took issue with him sticking in stupid GUN PLAY into the  story of the Titanic, or bothered to ask,  why Rose would return to a guy she knew for 3 whole days, when  she was apparently married for decades, had kids, and  grandkids, obviously........so, yeah, screw that guy......who supported her broke keyster for 50 years.......(while she hid  a million dollar necklace in her sock drawer).------but yeah, she gets to return to the Titanic......because???????------------

why were all the other ghosts clapping for her?  She didn't have her life cut short like they all did.  The Titanic wasn't her grave........so why were they all standing around, waiting to welcome her back. ? Made zero sense.

Some people (those who live it out, e.g. waling around in Star Trek uniforms) need to have another life with another persona/avatar, because their lives are boring or miserable. Others do it just for entertainment, just to relax from all the depressing things that go on worldwide. They just need a break..like some other people like to talk about sports, talk in literature clubs about fictional stories like Shakespeare, etc

I find that even in sci-fi films you need a base level of believability based on science or it seems too hard to maintain interest in it unless it has a lot of other things going for it.

They enjoy doing it. And the purpose of entertainment is to entertain, so why not just relax and let people be entertained by entertainment in the manner that best fits their interest?
