Chlorophyll serves as the acceptor of electrons from the photolytic oxidation of water.
Light is absorbed by chlorophyll which excites an electron in the molecule to the point that the chlorophyll is oxidized. The energy of the excited electron is used to both form ATP from ADP and also to reduce NADP+ to NADPH.
