With its supposed current value at more than $50k us what is bitcoin actually for? Do people buy and sell things in bit coin?

Personally as bit coin isn't real I think its value will fall and the suckers will lose their money. As for the miners just a waste of electricity. I fail to understand how people buy everyday goods with it. How can database points be so valuable?
