Where does European Imperialism show up in the novella, "Heart of Darkness" ?

I'm having a bit of trouble finding this common theme as it only seems to be a story about a sailor reading another out at sea.

There are two things revolving around this novella.  The more obvious shtick is the white guys using force to exploit an ivory trade in darkest Africa.

The more subtle lit crit shtick is unbalanced emphasis:  white people, black people, yellow people, brown people, red people, etc. have and continue to oppress and exploit others of similar and different tribes, ethnicities, colors, etc.

Where does the story take place?  Take your time reading the story.

So maybe you should read the book again,  more slowly this time.
