Why do people suddenly find God when tragedy strikes their life? ?

Tragedy can get our attention and remind us how much we need God.

Most don't but they present that many do.

It's only when something strikes home that they insert themselves into the picture.
When people are thus personally affected and involved, they can chart their course according to how things are relevant to them and by valuing the good in themselves and in the information presented to them.

They look for GOD. I'm not sure they 'find' Him. That tends to happen when the search actually yields results that help with the situation. Tragedy is more of a crossroads, since some people look for GOD and quickly give up, using the lack of results as their reason for abandoning the search and abandoning GOD Himself.
More accurately, I would say that people often don't start looking for GOD until something big levels them and disturbs their routine, their plans or their comfort so that it cannot be 'spun' away or ignored.
The wise humble themselves before this happens. You can do that by being aware of the tragedy of others first, since there is no shortage of it and helping you develop empathy is usually GOD's motive for giving you a 'taste' of tragedy yourself.
"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
"Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you." (James 4:8-10).

Some "find" god and some leave religion when faced with tragedy.

A quick dose of mortality awakens them to reality. Humans are fragile beings.
