Where tf is my son getting all these racist ideas?

My son isn't very social, he spends most of his time in his room on his computer. Ever since the elcetion he has been so depressed. I tell him that it isn't a big deal, but he is insisting that he has no future and that everyone hates white men. Should I take his computer away? Where is he hearing all this nonsense?

Remind your son that never in the history of American journalism has there ever been a time when the reportage was as out of sync with general thought as it is in this moment. Ordinary people don't think the things that are being published right now and represented as mainstream thought. So encourage him to spend less time on news sites and more time interacting with non political people who share some of his non political interests. It's tough right now if you're on lockdown to get kids off the computer as that's in some cases their only conduit to the world. But it does no one any good to dwell on the absurdity of these times. Better to really invest in something else, even if it's just video games or following professional sports teams.

Biden announced huge benefits specifically for all identity demographics EXCEPT white men.

So where do you think your son might be getting such ideas?

There's definitely a backlash against "white privilege", and men are targeted more than women.  But you're asking the wrong question.  Why are you allowing him to spend so much time online?  This is terrible parenting even if he's over 18.  Plenty of people share his views, but they're not depressed about it because they have busy lives and lots of things to distract from it.  You're letting your son use it to define his whole world and THAT is why he's depressed.  Start being a parent.

  • Clearly you've never seen the chat rooms of video games...it's a sewer of white dudes using every racial slur imaginable.

How old is your son? Where he's getting his ideas is clearly from the computer. Depending upon his age, you can block some of the information he is receiving, ask how in Computers and Internet section.  Where is his father in all this? You need to be discussing his views with him and challenging the ones you are concerned about.  If his depression persists, take him to your doctor for an evaluation , and consider seeking therapy for him. Do not let this go. Good wishes,

If you're not monitoring the sites he's visiting, that's your source. You should either restrict or cut off his internet access. But first, make sure he reads info on how to recognize misinformation & propaganda.

  • "...he spends most of his time in his room on his computer."  Seems like you answered your own question.  Where did tens of thousands of people get fed so many lies that they stormed the capital?  It wasn't in the local coffee shop or at Target.  Maybe block certain sites instead of taking away the computer.
