National security is the primary responsibility of the federal government. However, often they will coordinate with state and local authorities in providing security.  You have Secret Service that protects government officials. You have NSA [Dept. of Defense], that is responsible for cryptographic and communications intelligence and security.   DOJ/FBI and CIA . They all focus on security and safety issues, some collect intelligence on foreign interference and adversaries [CIA] others focus on domestic terrorists [FBI]. FBI attorney [US Attorneys], also prosecute people accused of federal crimes. Such as the ones that are being arrested for insurrection against the U.S. Government.
