Question about taxes?

If I file taxes first and say "no one can claim me" will it actually prevent someone from claiming me as a dependent when they file their own?

It will prevent "someone" from filing electronically.

However, it will not prevent someone from claiming you.   They could still mail in their return listing you as a dependent if they believe that you qualify as their dependent.

Then, you both start getting letters from the IRS.

The law determines who is and is not a dependent.  You do not get to pick and choose.
