8 Metal ferrules on new upper intake gasket?

2003 Ford F150 4.6 L

I'm replacing the upper and lower gaskets. The new upper gasket has 8 metal ferrules in it. The old has none. Fel-Pro states in a piece of paper that I must remove the ferrules if the original ones don't have them, but they don't explain HOW.  It doesn't seem to pry off easily. Can anyone help me please?

Never mind. I just grabbed a needle-nose pliers and twisted them off.
