Anime with chess and mecha. (Not Geass)?

Question

My roomate is looking for an anime in which a man is playing chess in a large robot, and then another man exits his giant robot and shoots a woman. He saw it late at night on adult swim somewhere between 2008-12. We just watched all of cole Geass and he said it was not it. Please help...
