I think it has a classic sounding appeal. It is of Hebrew origin, and after the Diaspora, which is the dispersion of the Jews among the nations, the name was introduced into those respective cultures. The same thing goes with food and other cross cultural exchanges. It's like asking why anime is so popular.... because it spread and people of other cultures seem to like it.

Nathaniel  - the name means Given is God, which is similar in meaning to Matthew - gift of Yah

The popularity of Nathaniel has risen and fallen over the years, but it's never among the Top 10 most popular boy's names in the United States.  Nathaniel is a Biblical name, so it's bound to be popular among Christians and Jews.

It's a traditional name which hasn't been overused and has more approachable diminuatives.

Because it’s a strong Biblical name. Nathaniel sounds very handsome on its own or with nicknames such as Nathan or Nate. It’s one of my favorites. I know 3 of them .

I wouldn't say it's that popular, I've never met a Nathaniel. But if it's more popular where you live, I guess that's because it's a classic name but not overused, sensible yet elegant with good nickname options.

Is it, though?  I do not personally know anyone named Nathaniel.  I know quite a few men or boys named Nathan, though.  That seems much more popular to me.  People use names they like.

Nathaniel has actually become less popular over the last 20 years. I guess people like the nicknames Nate and Nathan. Ethan is more popular than Nathan.
