People wore masks and prevented the spread,  relegating infections to small populations/families. 

Sort of how the ebola pandemic ended, only on a much larger scale.

after 2 years , close to 20 million dead and hundreds of millions sick but recovered , the world had herd immunity .

--  It ended because people who had the Spanish Flu either died or developed immunities to it, and the "Herd immunity" affect kicked in.

One thing about the flu is it is seasonal and it fades out in the summer.   Covid does not seem to be the same and stays around all year.
