Why were many 747 jumbo jets were required so quickly in 2020?
- regeruggedLv 71 month agoFavorite Answer
With four engines they were expensive to make and expensive to operate because of fuel costs.

Airlines retired 747s because 777s carry just as many people at a lower cost per mile

I am not sure what you are trying to ask.
There were 7 Boeing 747 deliveries in 2019, and only 5 in 2020. There were zero orders in those two years; actually there was one cancellation. And there are only 11 plane that remain in order.Essentially, the only activity that large planes had over the last year was as cargo transport, some airlines not even bothering to remove the seats and simply putting packages on top of them (as long as the shipments could fit, evidently).

I think you mean 'retired'. Old age and uneconomical is what beats planes.

Logic would dictate they were needed to replace older aircraft.
FWIW, Aerosmith passed on buying the plane Lynyrd Skynyrd went down in.
