Odds of the Olympics happening?

Anyone in Japan know anything? Do you think it will just be cancelled altogether and Tokyo will have to wait their turn again?

No. The next Olympics event will be held Winter 2022 in Beijing, China.

I’d go with the 2024 answers . Shunt everyone back one. Makes sense. 2021 isn’t going to happen, vaccines or not.

I would suspect France are behind schedule anyway as construction sites were closed at some point.

The “poor athletes” will just have to take a reality check and realise the world doesn’t revolve around them.

I'd suggest moving the line of hosts back one, so Japan has 2024 Olympics. Who knows, extra 4 years might even mean other places will be ready on time..

With no supporters yeah why not those athletes have trained all their lies and all year to get into that shape, so let them go and do what the rest of us can't do.

We need some fun in our lives, covid rubbish is getting me down.

IMO, the games will be cancelled for this year despite the Japanese government's current claims that it went proceed - they said the same thing back in 2020 just before they postponed it for 2021.

The only way the Olympic games will be allowed to start is if by some miracle a large portion of the population in Japan and from other countries have been vaccinated. Given how ridiculously slow the deployment of the vaccine has been, I highly doubt this is going to happen by April. I would be surprised if it could be done by end of year.

Very shaky at this point. Japan has already spent over 15 billion bucks to prepare for it, and it would be a terrible loss if it does not go forward. But the pandemic is still raging, and even though Japan has been spared the worst of it until now, currently it is getting worse.

Vaccinations are supposed to start in February, and would take until summertime to finish, so there is a chance, but it looks like the chance of the games going forward is in very rough weather right now.

The way it's looking, they'll either be:

    A. Televised only

    B. Limited spectator access, from only those residing in Japan

    C. Pushed back to 2032

I think it's unlikely at this point. There won't be enough vaccinations in time to hold them.

Most ordinary Japanese seem against it, as attested by comments on Yahoo! Japan News. Only the government and those concerned are very adamant at holding it no matter what, though opinions may be mixed even among those in the top. And people seem disgusted at how adamant they are. As for me, being Japanese, I'm not interested at all. I just don't care if it will be held or not.

I highly doubt it will be cancelled. It may well be delayed again, and worst-case scenario it may even be delayed until 2024, but far too much money is tied up in it to cancel.
