Is there a time limit on a self defense scenario when you are trying to protect your life and loved ones and can you call in reinforcements?

Self defense laws are intended to protect you from an illegal attack. Keep in mind self defense is an "affirmative defense". That means the burden of proof is on you to prove you had the privilege to use it. If you have time to wait for reinforcements it is unlikely you in a position to claim self defense or you could successfully argue your actions were more reasonable than dialing 911. Even more problematic would be how your "reinforcements" could argue self defense when they came from a safe place to participate.
