Why do the free jaffa need symbiotes?

The Jaffa are genetically modified humans with pouches to raise young Goa'uld.  When the young are mature enough to be implanted, they are taken from the Jaffa and replaced with another young...at least that's usually the plan.

The free Jaffa have no source of replacement symbiotes.  So at first, they need to steal them or their people die because the symbiote replaces their immune system, leaving them effectively like AIDS patients in the early days before a treatment was developed...only more so.

As the story evolves, a drug made of "ground Goa'uld" as O'neil puts it, is encountered.  This drug allow this dependency to be replaced...but the Jaffa are dependent on the drug...which Earth makes.  There are many Jaffa who resent this as a sort of 'new master' relationship.

The symbiotes make them stronger and heal faster, but if the symbiote is removed or otherwise dies, the host will get sick and die, but later, it is discovered that the drug, tretonin, can keep a free jaffa alive without a symbiote.
