That's my dream: to work from home and

Absolutely!  I don't know how long you'll want to stay in California...but the career itself is rock-solid.  It's not about to be replaced by a machine, and there would have to be a complete economic collapse before insurance companies and hospitals and doctors didn't need medical transcription.
