Why wasn't Nixon impeached or punished for the Watergate scandal?

It seems like all he did was simply resign and walk away in disgrace, and everyone moved on.....

He was not impeached because he resigned before the House of Representatives voted on whether to impeach him.

He was not punished because President Ford pardoned him.

He resigned to avoid being impeached and he didn't go to prison because Ford pardoned him.

He resigned when it became obvious he was going to be convicted by the Senate, he lost support of GOP Senators at that point
