Need help with a time travel question?

Question

So let's say you have 2 timelines; timeline 1 and timeline 2. You start in timeline 1, go back in time, change something, and end up in timeline 2. Now you are in timeline 2 and you live in that timeline for a year. How does it make any sense that traveling forward in time makes you go back to timeline 1?
