Did the "White" House get its nickname from the white paint on the building or from George and Martha Washington's White House Plantation?

The British burned the Executive Mansion during the war of 1812. The "white" refers to what was used to cover up the burned portions.

Doubtful. Washington was dead when construction of it started. Sounds like wishful thinking on someone's part to me given the fact that "the White House" wasn't its official name until 1901.
