For what reasons do some employers have a policy about forming close bonds and friendships with fellow associates ?
Why do some places of business discourage or prohibit two associates from forming a relationship ?
My educated guess would be that it causes Distraction and unnecessary gossip in the workplace.

Because the employer is in business to make money NOT to supply dates for employees.

It's not usually friendships or bonds that are frowned on, it's romantic entanglements. It can cause a lot of workplace prejudice, distractions and sometimes hurt feelings or hostile work environments. An employer cannot prohibit making friends or having relationships--but they can curtail romantic relationships with co-workers, though they can't really prohibit it legally.
Many employers have attempted to say "no workplace dating" but it hardly ever really works to do so. It's very difficult to enforce such policies. They can TRY--but people find ways around it and do it anyway. However, it's not always such a problem that people get fired over it. You can't really legislate attraction, or romantic feelings. What they CAN force rules about are things like unfair promotions, favoritism because of such relationships or rules about husband/wife employment in the same department or office, and so forth.Source(s): Worked in HR for 31 years.

Because they want you to live a lonely, miserable existence right before you fall down a ventilation shaft and die because nobody bothered to form a close enough bond with you so they would care enough to tell you there was a ventilation shaft at the end of a dark corridor.

That type of activity seriously ruins the business, changes the work focus and promotes lazy workers because they are busy....working a date, verses the job.
I've worked in spots where it wasn't mentioned but, there were couples who didnt work out and the badgering, gossip, and foul play was a focus of every work day. The office was very inefficient.
Other places with these rules as well as a dress code and cell phone use on duty sign off staff meeting upon hiring, the business was a money maker with staff on task.
Its a good rule.

Not only that but if they break up, it could be awkward for every one. Also that employee could show favoritism to the person that they have a friendship / relationship with.
Usually friendships are allowed, but beyond that some companies have policies against dating co workers, or people that you work directly under with to prevent any animosity that could happen.

Some companies do prohibit employee fraternization. It keeps drama out of the workplace.

Because it promotes favoritism.
