Is having empathy for others, understanding their motives & being able to criticize their actions/decisions helpful in making own decisions?

Or does this not make much sense. .Like isn't learning from others important in having our own sense of purpose and deciding what we believe in?

    Well, yes.

Because you might at some point be in a similar situation.

Imagine having a child and your spouse dies unexpectedly.

There's no life insurance because you're both young.

You were counting on them for money as they had skills and a decent job.

Suddenly your life is filled with bad choices.

    Now what?
