What is an "unauthorized deduction" from payroll in California?

My previous employer took money out of my pay when people walked out, which caused me a lot of distress. I'm wondering if that's wage theft

It's a bar in Palm Springs. I was working as a waiter part time for a few weeks during October and November.

Any deduction of your wages that you didn't give permission to take is unauthorised

It is a deduction of anything other than what is allowed by law that you did not authorize.
