Diamond is a crystal formed by carbon atoms. It is formed when carbon is put under high pressure and high heat. People can now make diamonds inside factories.

Diamond cubic structure (Thanks Bob). It is formed under immense heat and pressure deep in the Earth, then it is transported rapidly to the surface in volcanic vents. If it comes to the surface too slowly it will anneal to graphite.

It's compressed carbon made by tremendous pressure over eons of time and can be made artificially, though not as well as mother nature achieved.
