Highlanders are immortals . . . they can live for ever and can only be killed by cutting off their heads.  They are very strong, just like your Mommie.  Would you cut off your Mommie's head?  That wouldn't be nice.

In general "highlander" (with a lower-case "h") can refer to any number of peoples around the world that live in the hill and mountain regions. The vast majority of sport mascots in the USA, however, are based on the stereotypical kilt-wearing, bagpipe-playing, hard-fighting natives of Northern Scotland.

Historically, people who live in the hilly regions of countries have a reputation for rugged independence, tight-knit culture and simple values... Think of the stereotypes around the people of Appalachia and the Ozarks in the USA.  Because of their years of resistance against English rule and assimilation into British mainstream culture, Scottish Highlanders also earned a reputation as fierce warriors.

Their use as a mascot is consistent with other cultural groups, like Cowboys and Native Americans in American sports, seen to represent a strong sense of unity, loyalty and fighting spirit.
