Is it unconstitutional for a judge to sentence a 16 year old to life in jail for first degree murder?

No. Murder is not a federal crime, so each state may decide how to handle it. The Constitution doesn't say anything about murder.
Supposedly, the state of Texas claims the right to try a person as young as 13 'as an adult', meaning a 13-year-old murderer might well get the death penalty. They haven't tried it yet, but their laws make it possible.
