It follows the pattern that is often seen with trilogies.  The first one is the best.  The second is still very good, but never shines as bright because the novelty is gone.  The third is typically the worst, predictable, and leaves the viewer unsatisfied.

Superhero stories also almost universally apply one common trope.  At some point, they're going to explore a narrative where the hero is without his/her powers but still must overcome the enemy.  Since that didn't happen in the first two films, and knowing that the ever-expanding MCU probably meant there wouldn't be a fourth Iron Man, there was zero surprise when they decided to use this as a major theme of the third movie.

The first one.  But the Black Widow scenes in IM2 were awesome.  Unfortunately the rest of IM2 wasn't as strong.
